My Mind Needs a Holiday Too!

Ever felt so mentally exhausted that even deciding what to cook for dinner feels like an international conference?

Welcome to adulthood.

We take holidays to escape work, book spa appointments to relax our bodies and sometimes disappear for a weekend just to recharge.

But what about our minds?

That poor little fellow is working overtime without salary, weekly offs or even a thank-you note.

From remembering birthdays, managing household responsibilities and worrying about tomorrow to replaying an embarrassing conversation from 2009 β€” our minds have an impressive workload.

And the funniest part? Sometimes we are physically doing absolutely nothing, yet our brains are running a marathon.

The never-ending meeting inside our heads

Have you ever gone to bed feeling exhausted, only to find your mind suddenly becoming extraordinarily productive?

It remembers the electricity bill, tomorrow’s grocery list, an unfinished conversation and that one thing you should have said to someone ten years ago.

At 2 AM, it even starts discussing the meaning of 🧬 life.

I sometimes feel our minds need a strict office manager who can announce:

“Meeting over! Everybody go home. No further discussions tonight.”

Unfortunately, nobody seems to have access to that button.

Why does our mind get so tired?

Mental exhaustion doesn’t always come from working hard. Sometimes it comes from thinking too much, worrying too often and carrying too many little responsibilities.

Here are a few familiar culprits:

– Information overload: Our phones deliver more information before breakfast than our grandparents received in a week.
– Constant worrying: We spend today worrying about tomorrow and tomorrow worrying about the day after.
– Too many responsibilities: We become the unofficial managers of everyone’s needs, schedules and problems.
– Lack of proper rest: Sitting quietly doesn’t necessarily mean our minds are resting.

Over time, this constant mental activity can affect our mood, concentration and sleep.

Five little holidays your mind deserves

The good news? Your mind doesn’t always need a holiday destination, expensive treatments or a suitcase.

Sometimes, a few small changes can help.

1. Take a holiday from your phone.

Try putting your phone away for 30 minutes. No scrolling, no checking messages and no looking at what everyone else is doing.

The world will probably survive without your supervision.

2. Go for a leisurely walk.

Leave your worries at home, if possible. Notice the trees, listen to the birds and enjoy the fresh air.

Walking can support both physical and mental wellbeing.

3. Learn the art of doing nothing.

Sit in the garden, look outside the window or simply enjoy a quiet moment.

You don’t have to turn every free minute into a productive activity.

4. Talk to someone who makes you laugh.

A good conversation with a friend can sometimes lift your spirits more than an hour of scrolling through motivational quotes.

5. Stop carrying tomorrow into today.

Make a small to-do list, deal with what you can and allow the remaining things to wait.

Not every problem needs to be solved before bedtime.

Give yourself permission to pause

We often feel guilty when we take time for ourselves.

We think we should be doing something useful, helping someone or completing another task.

But rest is not laziness. Taking care of our mental wellbeing is part of taking care of our health.

And if your mind feels persistently overwhelmed, anxious or exhausted, don’t hesitate to seek professional support.

Perhaps we don’t need to escape our lives to feel refreshed.

Perhaps we simply need to stop treating every day like an emergency.

So the next time your mind starts working overtime, gently remind it:

“Dear Mind, your services are appreciated, but your shift is over. Please proceed to the nearest peaceful corner and enjoy your holiday.”

After all, even the busiest employee deserves a day off.

And frankly, mine is overdue😊
