Drenched, Stranded, and More Alive Than Ever

Whatโ€™s a moment in your life that made you feel truly alive?

The rain was coming down in sheets, turning the parking lot of a middle-of-nowhere diner into a sea of red and yellow neon reflections.

My car had died twenty minutes earlier. No cell service, midnight, and two hours from home. By every rational metric, it was a disaster.

I stepped out of the driver’s seat into the downpour. The cold water soaked through my jacket instantly, plastering my hair to my forehead. I took a deep breath, expected to feel panicked and instead, I started laughing.

It was a full, uncontrollable belly laugh.

In that moment, all the artificial stress of my week vanished.

There were no emails to answer, no schedules to manage, no future to overthink. There was only the freezing rain, the smell of wet asphalt, and the absurd reality of the situation. My skin prickled with cold; my heart thudded in my chest.

I was completely, undeniably in the present.

We spend so much time moving safely between climate-controlled rooms and digital screens that we forget what raw existence feels like. It took a broken alternator and a rainstorm to snap me out of autopilot and remind me I was breathing.

This unexpected mess ended up making me feel alive.

“Sometimes it takes a complete breakdown of your plans to remember you’re actually alive.”
