What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?
I don’t know if this counts as being spontaneous.
But one day, I simply walked away.
Not from a place.
Not from a job.
From a friendship.
And honestly, I didn’t plan it.
For years, I had been trying to hold that friendship together. Whenever something hurt me, I swallowed it. Whenever they said something unkind, I told myself they probably didn’t mean it.
But there were little things.
The jokes that weren’t really jokes.
The way my happiness was sometimes met with a sarcastic comment.
The plans I was excluded from, followed by a casual, “Oh, I thought you wouldn’t be interested.”
And then there was the guilt.
I remember one particular evening when I couldn’t meet because I had already made plans with my family.
The reply came almost immediately:
“It’s okay. I guess I’m just not important enough for you. I always make time for you.”
Those words hit me harder than they probably should have.
I cancelled my plans.
I went to meet them.
And on the way there, I suddenly had this uncomfortable thought:
Why am I doing this?
Why was I so afraid of making someone unhappy that I was willing to make myself unhappy?
I didn’t have an answer.
Still, I stayed.
Until one day, another conversation happened. More hurtful words. More accusations. And something inside me just… broke.
But strangely, this time I didn’t cry.
I didn’t argue.
I didn’t explain myself for the hundredth time.
I didn’t write that long message trying to make them understand my heart.
I just went quiet.
And somewhere in that silence, I made a decision:
I’m done.
I walked away.
It wasn’t brave or dramatic. It was actually quite messy inside me.
I missed them.
I questioned myself.
I wondered whether I had been too sensitive. Whether I should call. Whether years of friendship could really be thrown away over words and feelings.
But then I remembered how often I had felt small while trying to keep that friendship alive.
And slowly, the guilt disappeared.
Something else took its place.
Peace.
I began laughing without wondering whether someone would make fun of me. I started saying “no” without writing an explanation in my head. I stopped checking my phone with that familiar little fear of what criticism might be waiting for me.
And that’s when I understood something I wish I had understood earlier:
A friendship shouldn’t make you constantly audition for your place in someone’s life.
That spontaneous decision changed something in me.
I didn’t lose myself when I walked away from that friendship.
I think I finally found myself again.
And sometimes, the most spontaneous thing we ever do is also the most necessary
we stop explaining, stop chasing, and simply choose to leave.
“Sometimes, we don’t walk away because we stopped caring. We walk away because we finally started caring about ourselves.” ❤️

This is a beautiful and incredibly necessary reminder. We often think of spontaneity as road trips or sudden adventures, but choosing to suddenly choose yourself is the ultimate spontaneous act. Good one.

Thank you so much for seeing the deeper meaning behind it. ❤️ Sometimes the most spontaneous decisions are the ones that quietly change our lives. Choosing ourselves and our peace can be a beautiful kind of courage. So glad this resonated with you. 🌸

The part that struck me most was that you didn’t argue or explain you just went quiet. Because sometimes the most radical thing we can do is refuse to keep performing. The guilt that finally disappeared, the peace that took its place—that’s the real spontaneity here. Not choosing something new, but choosing yourself by choosing not to shrink anymore. That takes courage disguised as silence.

Thank you for understanding the silence behind the words. ❤️ Sometimes walking away quietly isn’t weakness, it’s finally choosing peace over proving your worth. I’m glad the words resonated with you. Sending you warmth and love. 🌸

I loved that instead of talking about an adventure or vacation you wrote this it’s very touching. It’s hard losing a friend but it’s even harder staying in such a toxic friendship. The peace your feeling now is much better than that friendship.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. It really means a lot to hear that. It definitely wasn’t easy to walk away, but you’re so right, the peace of mind that comes with stepping out of a toxic situation is worth every bit of it. I appreciate your kind words and support!
