How do you make time for self-care?
โSelf-care isn’t always escaping from life; sometimes it’s simply pausing long enough to come back to yourself.โ
For years, I thought self-care meant doing something special.
A spa day.
A long holiday.
A quiet afternoon with a cup of tea and a book.
Lovely ideas, but somehow, there was always something more important.
The breakfast had to be made. The phone had to be answered. Someone needed something. And there was always that mysterious sentence waiting at the end of the day:
“I’ll do it tomorrow.”
Then one morning, I was standing in my kitchen, waiting for the tea to boil.
Instead of rushing to the next thing, I simply stood there.
The sunlight was falling across the kitchen floor. A little breeze moved the curtain. My tea was making that familiar, comforting sound.
And for ten minutes, I did absolutely nothing.
No phone.
No planning.
No worrying about what came next.
Just me, my tea, and a strangely peaceful kitchen.
Those ten minutes changed something.
I realised self-care doesn’t always need to be an appointment on the calendar. Sometimes it is simply stopping long enough to notice that you are alive.
Now I steal little moments whenever I can.
I sit in the balcony with my morning tea. I listen to an old song. I take a slow walk without turning it into exercise. Sometimes I close my eyes for a few minutes and let my mind be completely useless.
And strangely, I don’t feel guilty anymore.
Because taking care of myself doesn’t mean I love the people around me any less.
It simply means I remember that I am one of the people who needs my care too.
Maybe that’s what self-care really is ,not escaping from life, but pausing long enough to come back to yourself.
And sometimes, all it takes is ten quiet minutes and a cup of tea.
