The Conspiracy Theory I’m Not Ready to Dismiss..

Did My Phone Just Read My Mind?”

What’s a conspiracy theory you actually find believable?

I’ve never been much of a conspiracy-theory person.

Aliens controlling governments? Secret societies running the world? I’ll listen, but I’m keeping one eyebrow raised.

But there is one theory I find surprisingly believable:

Big companies sometimes know far more about us than we realise and quietly use that knowledge to influence what we buy, watch, and even think we want.

Not exactly a wild conspiracy, is it?

We casually search for a pair of shoes, talk about a holiday, or pause on a video about gardening and suddenly our screens seem to know exactly what we’re interested in.

We tell ourselves, “It’s just the algorithm.”

And perhaps it is.

But sometimes I wonder whether the real conspiracy isn’t that someone is secretly watching us…

It’s that we have willingly handed over so much information that they don’t need to watch us anymore.

Our phones, searches, purchases, likes, locations and scrolling habits tell remarkably detailed stories about us.

“Maybe the algorithm isn’t reading our minds. Maybe it knows us better than we think.”

That thought is far more unsettling to me than little green men from another planet.

Maybe the most believable conspiracy theory is the one hiding in plain sight.

“The strangest thing about technology isn’t that it knows what we want ,it’s how often it knows before we do.”

  1. That’s the point. We’ve willingly handed out so much information about ourselves that there’s barely any privacy left in the digital space. Whenever we download an app, we blindly grant whatever permissions it asks for without stopping to think. In many ways, our own reckless actions have compromised our privacy. So, why do we need a conspiracy theory?
