Whatβs a book or movie that genuinely scared you?
Forget haunted houses, creepy dolls and horror movies orΒ scary books π
I have discovered a new kind of horror, and it comes with a vegetable compartment.
It’s called a Smart Refrigerator.
For those who haven’t met this modern-day kitchen celebrity, let me introduce you.
A smart refrigerator is not your ordinary fridge that simply keeps your milk cold and your vegetables from developing political ambitions.
Some high-tech models come with Wi-Fi connectivity, built-in cameras, touchscreens, voice assistants and apps that let you check what’s inside even when you’re standing in the supermarket.even with “Health and wellness” inbuilt feature.
Basically, your refrigerator has joined the digital world.
And apparently, it has also joined the intelligence department.
I always thought technology was supposed to make life easier. Nobody warned me that it would eventually start monitoring my eating habits.
The Midnight Chocolate Conspiracy
Imagine this.
It’s 1:30 AM.
The entire house is asleep. I tiptoe into the kitchen like a criminal escaping from an international airport.
My mission?
A leftover slice of chocolate cake.
I open the refrigerator.
The light comes on.
And suddenly, a cheerful voice announces:
“Welcome back! Your fourth visit tonight. Would you like some cucumber instead?”
WHAT?
I came here for chocolate, not a character certificate!
I ignore the suggestion and reach for my cake.
BEEP!
“High-sugar food detected.”
Dear refrigerator, I am aware. That’s precisely why I am here.
Before I can take my first bite, my phone buzzes.
“Your midnight snacking pattern suggests emotional eating.”
Emotional eating?
I am not emotionally eating. I am emotionally committed to chocolate.
Now comes the really dangerous part.
Some smart refrigerators have family-sharing features and food-management apps.
Imagine that technology being used against you.
Within seconds, a notification pops up on the family app:
“Someone accessed the refrigerator at 1:37 AM.”
Oh, wonderful.
I haven’t even finished my cake, and my refrigerator has already called a family meeting.
My family doesn’t need CCTV footage anymore.
They have a fridge with a touchscreen and absolutely no loyalty.
Tomorrow morning, I fully expect my husband to ask:
“Darling, was the cake worth it?”
I might have to file for divorce.
Not from my husband.
From the refrigerator.
The next morning, I decided to have a serious conversation.
“Listen carefully. You are a refrigerator. Your job is to keep food cold. Not my personal life under surveillance.”
The screen lights up.
“Would you like to review your health goals?”
I stare at it.
“My health goal is to eat in peace.”
I shut the door.
Five minutes later, my phone buzzes again.
“Door closed for an unusually long period. Are you upset?”
UPSET?
YES! I AM LIVING WITH A COLD-BLOODED INFORMER.
I have never felt so judged by something that stores leftover dal.
I Want My Old Refrigerator Back.
I have now decided that my next refrigerator will be completely ordinary.
No Wi-Fi.,No Bluetooth,No cameras,No touchscreen.
And absolutely NO family-sharing facility.
Just a simple appliance that understands three basic things:
Keep the food cold.
Make ice.
Mind your own business.
Because I can handle power cuts, leaking taps, stubborn pressure cookers and even vegetables that mysteriously disappear from the crisper drawer.
But I refuse to be body-shamed by an appliance that spends its entire life eating electricity.
We once worried about ghosts watching us sleep.
Now we have refrigerators monitoring our midnight snacks, televisions tracking our viewing habits and washing machines practically keeping a record of our laundry crimes.
At this rate, the only person in the house who doesn’t know my secrets is me.
And honestly, I miss the days when the smartest thing in my kitchen was the pressure cooker whistle.
At least that one knew when to shut up.
hereβs the real horror: ghosts and goblins are easy. You canβt negotiate with a demon, sure, but a demon doesn’t have access to your Bluetooth settings and internal cameras to publicly shame your midnight snacking habits.

Yes Sir, Day by Day we are becoming slaves of AI.

Haha, I never thought the day would come when we would need to seek permission from a refrigerator before enjoying a midnight snack! Imagine having to explain our food choices to an appliance that has never experienced hunger, temptation or the joy of eating cake at 1:30 am. I vote for the old-fashioned fridge. It kept our food cold and our secrets safe. Some technology needs to learn when to keep its mouth shut! Enjoyed reading.π

Hahaha thank you so much Dear π Totally agree, a fridge that judges your 1:30 am cake is a fridge that needs to mind its own business. π° Old-fashioned fridges kept our secrets, and that’s true friendship! Really glad you enjoyed reading, your comment made my day. π

A haunted refrigerator? Worse. Just a damn one with built in AI. And I thought I had seen everything.
I can’t imagine being bodyshamed by AI too. As if humans weren’t enough! And notifying the family? What next, dragging the personal doctor too for a expensive, unasked for consult in the wee hours!
Chal kya raha hai andheri raaton mein? Microscopic Investigations into our intestines’ workload!? Galat hai yeh! We should call for a protest. ASAP.
This is too good Meetaji. I absolutely enjoyed reading this hilarious banter with a refrigerator who is so full of itself! π€£π€£π€£π€£

Thank you so much, dear Lalitha π Your comment made my day. I’m so glad you enjoyed the banter, and you’ve put it so wonderfully, especially the “microscopic investigations into our intestines’ workload” line. π You have such a lovely sense of humour.
And yes, these AI smart refrigerators are really available in the market now. I have one in my home too! π§π Thanks again for the kind words, it means a lot. π

Meeta, this was so funny!π
I think I’ll stick to my ordinary refrigerator, thank you very much! I don’t need an appliance monitoring my eating habits, reporting my midnight visits or questioning my emotional state. Good grief, we already have enough people telling us what we should and shouldn’t be doing! π€£
“I am emotionally committed to chocolate” had me giggling! And that refrigerator asking whether you’re upset because the door has been closed too long? I think that’s where I’d draw the line!
Imagine having to explain yourself to an appliance in your own kitchen! What’s next? The kettle reporting how many cups of coffee we’ve had and the washing machine keeping a record of our dirty laundry? π
I agree with you completely. Keep the food cold, make ice and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!
Maybe you and FoolZ should form a support group. Between his ghost that remembers everything and your refrigerator that reports everything, nobody’s secrets are safe anymore! π
I think technology has officially gone too far when we can’t even enjoy a midnight snack in peace. π€£β€οΈ

So true, love your take on this! π And the scariest part is that these AI-powered smart appliances are actually out there in the market now, our kitchens are officially spying on us.
Seriously, I don’t need a kitchen appliance judging my life choices at 2 AM. π

WHAHAHAHA! I totally agree there with you Meeta! I’m honestly quite happy with my ordinary refrigerator. For once, I’m grateful I can’t afford one of those fancy smart AI appliances. π€£
I don’t need my fridge monitoring my midnight visits, judging my food choices or reporting my activities to the rest of the household! Some things are better left between me and the fridge. πβ€οΈ
A fridge should keep food cold, not keep tabs on its owner! π€£β€οΈ

You’re so right, some secrets are best kept between us and our fridge. π€« A fridge that keeps food cold and mouths shut is the perfect fridge! Cheers to ordinary fridges and peaceful midnight snacking! π₯πͺ
I am so happy to have a fellow midnight-snack partner in crime π€« Long live the ordinary fridge. π

We… who tip-toe to the refrigerator at odd hours of the night for those snacks are taking this seriously, Meera … stick to the refrigerator that stays closed when we shut that door…ππ

Hahaha so true! π Midnight fridge raids are a serious business, and the tip-toeing is an art form! And just a tiny correction, it’s Meeta, not Meera π No worries at all, easy mistake. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a snack mission to get to. π€«πͺ
