What does it mean to be a good person?
Have you ever done something nice for someone and then immediately felt annoyed that they didn’t thank you properly?
Congratulations. You’re human. Your halo is probably still in the cupboard.
We all like to think we’re good people. We help when we can, feel bad when we hurt someone, and occasionally share inspirational quotes about kindness. But let someone cut in front of us in traffic, and suddenly we’re mentally writing their villain origin story.
So, what does it actually mean to be a good person?
I used to think it meant always being patient, always saying the right thing, and never getting angry. Basically, being human with the settings turned off.
But life has a funny way of teaching you otherwise.
Sometimes, being a good person is checking on a friend who said, โI’m fine,โ a little too quickly. Sometimes, it’s noticing that someone has gone unusually quiet and sitting beside them without forcing them to explain why.
And sometimes, it’s making someone a cup of coffee because you don’t know how to fix their problems, but you know they haven’t eaten all day.
There’s something beautiful about that kind of kindness. It doesn’t need an audience, a motivational quote, or background music from a Bollywood/hollywood film.
Of course, being good doesn’t mean being sweet all the time. We get irritated. We judge people. We occasionally rehearse imaginary arguments in the shower and win every single one. (Oscar-worthy performances, honestly.)
We make mistakes, too. What matters is whether we can admit them, apologise without adding a โbut you alsoโฆโ, and try to do better next time.
Maybe a good person isn’t someone who never hurts anyone. Maybe it’s someone who cares enough to notice when they have.
Someone who is kind when it’s easy, tries to be kind when it’s difficult, and remembers that everyone is fighting a battle we might know nothing about.
So, no, you don’t have to be an angel.
I don’t think good people are angels walking around in human clothes. They’re ordinary people with bad moods, silly mistakes, occasional jealousy, and a little drama.
The difference? They try not to make their bad day somebody else’s problem.
Just try to leave people feeling a little less alone, a little more understood, or at least a little happier than they were before they met you.
And if you lose your temper today? Breathe. Apologise if you need to. Try again tomorrow.
Your inner saint might be on leave, but it doesn’t have to resign.
After all, being a good person isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being human without forgetting the humanity of others.
Now tell me honestly: how often does your inner angel win an argument with your inner devil?

I am still waiting for the day someone annoys me and wisdom comes out of my mouth instead of a full lecture. ๐๐คฃ
