What’s the best way to meet new people while traveling?
Aizawl (Mizoram , India) has a way of making you slow down.
Maybe it’s the winding roads, the hills stretching into the distance, or the quiet rhythm of everyday life. There’s something about the city that makes you want to wander without checking the time.
One afternoon, after walking uphill for what felt like forever, I ducked into a small café.
The glass door opened with a soft bell, and I was greeted by the smell of freshly brewed coffee and warm food. Outside, the hills were wrapped in a soft afternoon haze, while inside, a few people chatted quietly over their drinks.
I found a corner, dropped my bag beside the chair, and looked at the menu.
Everything sounded unfamiliar.
I must have looked completely lost because the person sitting at the next table smiled and said, “You should try this.”
I laughed and asked, “Is it really that good?”
“Trust me,” they said.
So I did.
A simple recommendation became a conversation. We talked about Aizawl, favourite places to eat, quiet viewpoints, and those little corners of the city that never seem to appear in travel guides.
By the time I finished my drink, I had completely forgotten that I had walked into the café alone.
That small moment stayed with me.
Not because the food was extraordinary or because I had discovered some hidden tourist attractions, but because for a few minutes, Aizawl didn’t feel like a place I was visiting. It felt like a place someone had invited me into.
The best thing I found in Aizawl wasn’t on my map. It was sitting at the next table.
And perhaps that’s the real joy of travelling.
You don’t always need a planned itinerary to meet people. Sometimes, you just need to look up from your phone, smile, and let a conversation happen.
Forget the guidebook. Follow the conversation.
You never know where a stranger’s “You should try this” might take you.
