Have you ever liked a villain more than the hero? Who and why?
Have you ever watched a movie and realised, rather embarrassingly, that you were waiting for the villain to appear?
I have.
The hero usually arrives with perfect hair, a clean conscience and a mission to save the world. Everyone claps.
And then comes the villain.
Dark clothes. Sharp dialogue. A complicated past. A little mystery.
And suddenly… I’m interested.
My favourite? Miranda Priestly from “The Devil Wears Prada.“
Yes, I know. She is intimidating. She can freeze a room with one raised eyebrow, and her famous “cerulean” speech could make anyone question every piece of clothing in their wardrobe.
But what fascinated me was that she wasn’t simply evil. She was powerful, fiercely ambitious and unbelievably good at what she did. Beneath the icy exterior was a woman who had built an empire in a world where being soft was probably considered a professional weakness.
I didn’t necessarily want to be her.
I just couldn’t stop watching her.
Maybe that’s the strange magic of a good villain. Heroes make us wish to be better.
Villains make us curious about the parts of ourselves we don’t usually talk about.
And sometimes, if we’re honest, the villain gets the best lines.
Sorry, heroes. 😄

YES! OH YES! That famous “cerulean” speech had me doubt my entire wardrobe!! This… DESPITE being from the fashion industry myself!! 🙈😂. And like you say, if you are soft in this industry what are you even doing here, darlin’!! She had her reasons… Even if she didn’t I would still root for her!! 😂😭 Played to perfect by Meryl Streep, Miranda is a Villain who will have a hall of fame star in the echelons of Villaindom! Hail Miranda!! 😭😂😭😭

Haha, right?! That cerulean speech makes every single one of us look at our “lumpy blue sweaters” completely differently!
I love your take on this,it’s so refreshing to get an insider’s perspective from someone actually in fashion who can truly appreciate her genius! The fact that Miranda Priestly can make an industry pro double-check their wardrobe proves just how iconic Meryl Streep was. She was ruthless, but you can’t help but respect the masterclass. Hail Miranda indeed! Thanks Dear for sharing your wonderful thoughts

She is my favourite actress whose French Lieutenant’s Woman I loved in 1984, BBC Earth series on DD later and many other movies..her Miranda raising an eyebrow relates to my post on K N Singh. Thanks

Thank you so much for sharing this lovely memory! It’s wonderful to hear how her performance in The French Lieutenant’s Woman stayed with you all these years, and that BBC Earth connection too. That eyebrow-raise really is such a signature expression of hers, glad it brought back that association for you. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! 😊
