Whatβs the best piece of advice youβve ever received?
“Most decisions are bridges, not prisons. Cross them with courage.”
There was a time when I believed every decision had to be perfect.
The perfect job.
The perfect timing.
The perfect words.
I spent more time thinking than living.
Then, during an ordinary conversation over a cup of tea, someone much older than me smiled and said something that completely changed the way I see life:
“Don’t make every decision as if you’ll have to live with it forever. Most choices are just bridges, not prisons.”
At first, I laughed.
But the more I lived, the more I realized how true those words were.
We stay in jobs we dislike because we’re afraid of making the “wrong” move.
We don’t start hobbies because we’re unsure if we’ll be good enough.
We hesitate to travel, learn, write, forgive, or even say “yes” because we imagine every choice is permanent.
It isn’t.
Life isn’t built from permanent walls.
It’s built from temporary bridges that take us to places we couldn’t have imagined.
Some bridges lead exactly where we hoped.
Others simply teach us where not to go.
Both are valuable.
Looking back, the biggest regrets in my life didn’t come from trying something that failed.
They came from standing still because I was waiting for certainty.
If you’re holding onto a decision today, wondering whether it’s the “right” one, remember this:
You don’t have to know the entire journey.
You only have to cross the next bridge.
Sometimes, the best advice doesn’t make life easier.
It simply makes us brave enough to keep walking.
