Whatโs a skill you consider basic, that most people donโt actually know how to do?
At a neighborhood tea stall, I watched two old friends meet after years apart.
One spoke excitedly about his new business, the struggles, the victories, and the mistakes that nearly broke him.
The other nodded constantly.
“Absolutely.”
“Same here.”
“You know what you should do…”
Within minutes, advice started flowing.
The first man smiled politely, but something in his eyes faded. He hadn’t wanted solutions. He had wanted someone to simply hear his story.
That’s when it struck me.
Most of us think we know how to listen.
We don’t.
We’re usually waiting for our turn to speak. We’re comparing experiences, preparing opinions, searching for the perfect response while the other person is still talking.
Real listening is surprisingly rare.
It means letting someone finish a sentence without interrupting. It means resisting the urge to fix everything. It means making another person feel that, for a few minutes, they have your full attention.
It sounds like a basic life skill.
Yet it has become almost extraordinary.
The funny thing is, people rarely remember the smartest advice they receive.
But they never forget the person who made them feel heard.
Maybe the world doesn’t need better speakers.
Maybe it needs better listeners.
And perhaps that’s the simplest skill most of us are still learning.
“Sometimes the greatest gift you can give someone isn’t your advice ,it’s your attention.”

One response to “The Most Underrated Skill? Listening Without Preparing Your Reply.”
This is so true! People need to learn to listen and not give out opinions unless asked.
